Freedom Summer 60th anniversary: A conversation on healing through action

It has been 60 years since Freedom Summer, a project spearheaded by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to draw the nation’s attention to the violent oppression experienced by Black people in Mississippi trying to exercise their constitutional rights and register as many Black voters as possible across the state. During the same time period, the Congress of Racial Equality collaborated with SNCC to launch the Freedom Rides, which challenged segregation on interstate buses and bus terminals the In November 2023, we sat down with two renowned Freedom Riders, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland and Hezekiah Watkins, to talk about their involvement in the Civil Rights Movement and how action to advance racial equity aligns with healing.
