Three National Day of Racial Healing events to attend in the Southwest

0

The annual National Day of Racial Healing is less than a week away. Taking place on Tuesday, Jan. 21, the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it marks a day of shared contemplation for Americans and an opportunity to create a blueprint that helps us heal from the effects of racism.

Events will be held across the country in commemoration, but here are three happening in the Southwest that you should consider attending:

  • Tucson, Ariz. The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson will kick off their celebration of the National Day of Racial Healing on Saturday, Jan. 18 in partnership with the YWCA of Southern Arizona. Their day’s events will be moderated by Dr. Cheree Meeks, president of the NAACP, Tucson, and will include speakers, a youth panel, cultural performers and food.
  • Las Cruces, N.M.: The Learning Action Buffet is partnering with the Borderlands and Ethnic Studies Department at New Mexico State University to reflect on shared values and ways that support healing from racism. They hope to inspire collective action for a more equitable and just world and show their community’s dedication to liberation.
  • Albuquerque, N.M.: Explora Science Center and Children’s Museum of Albuquerque invites guests to join them for an evening of reflection, connection, and conversation at The Guild Cinema. They’ll screen Trails, a documentary by filmmaker Iman Shervington, and a Telemundo special broadcast on racial healing, followed by dialogue on the themes of the show, the film and racial healing.
