Family Values @ Work

0

In Brief

  • 2020 marks the 27th anniversary of the implementation of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
  • When enacted (and currently), the time guaranteed was unpaid, and the law excluded 40 percent of the workforce.
  • Family Values @ Work is steadily and creatively raising awareness in 27 states about the need for equitable and inclusive paid leave policies for all families.
  • The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is committed to ensuring all children are thriving, and one of the ways we can do that is by ensuring all working families have the supports they need to care for their children and families.

Why This Matters

While FMLA may have been implemented 27 years ago, it’s still not an equitable policy for all families. WKKF Grantee Family Values @ Work is building grassroots capacity and centering leaders of color to raise awareness about the need for equitable and inclusive paid leave policies for all families.

Because people of color and low-wage earners are least likely to have access to these policies, this grant is working to engage leadership so that the policies we pursue reflect the needs of those most affected.

the opportunity

In Colorado, the members of the Family Values @ Work Coalition hosted Know Your Rights trainings on housing, evictions and paid leave. They also conducted eviction defense training, an Emergency Economic Relief Press Conference, a Cancel the Rent Rally via Facebook and a deep-dive conversation on the State of Digital Organizing in Colorado. Many of these events included closed captioning and Spanish translation for wider accessibility; all continue to be available through Facebook.
