The Voices of I Am New Orleans audio series amplifies the ideas, leadership and stories of local youth. Produced in partnership with Be Loud Studios, the series highlights the work of W.K. Kellogg Foundation grantees and the young people who are stepping up to create a stronger, more vibrant future for New Orleans.
Episode 5: The Farm Changes You
Listeners are introduced to Izara and Carson, two assistant crew members from Grow Dat Youth Farm, who share how working on the farm has helped them develop their leadership skills, increase their appreciation of nature, and learn about food security and sustainability. They’re joined by Grow Dat Co-Executive Director Julie Gable, who explains how the farm’s mission goes far beyond growing food—it’s about cultivating a diverse group of young people to lead with purpose, equity and environmental awareness.
Grow Dat Youth Farm distributes over 50,000 pounds of fresh produce annually, helping to ensure every New Orleanian has access to healthy, affordable food. Through hands-on learning, community tours like the History of the Land and values-driven programming, Grow Dat is preparing youth to become thoughtful stewards of both land and community.

Izara, inspired by his experience, now aspires to become an environmental engineer.
“We need to make the world we are living in good for the future,” he says. “We all must be good to the environment because we need it.”
Programs like Grow Dat show how working the land can spark a lifelong commitment to justice, sustainability and civic responsibility.
