New Orleans

WKKF congratulates grantee Louisiana Children’s Museum President and CEO Tifferney M. White on her appointment as vice president of the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM). As vice president, White will support board initiatives that champion diversity, inclusion and advocacy for early childhood learning in museums nationwide. The ACM, a WKKF grantee, is a leading professional organization for children’s museums worldwide, unifying over 460 member institutions in 50 states and 19 countries.

Michigan

WKKF grantee Developing K.I.D.S. celebrated the opening of its newly renovated headquarters in northwest Detroit, marking a major milestone in its nearly 20-year history. The building, once an abandoned site, now provides air-conditioned space for youth programming, including summer camps, academic support and career readiness training. Developing K.I.D.S. has served more than 5,000 children and youth in Detroit since it was founded, and former participants have returned as staff, highlighting the nonprofit’s long-term impact on Detroit youth.

The Masa Center, a WKKF grantee based in Battle Creek, is reconnecting Latinx youth with their cultural roots through its Milpa project, an urban farming initiative grounded in Indigenous agricultural traditions. The project combines the cultivation of corn, beans and squash with community-building, leadership development and cultural education. Through partnerships, fellowships and youth programs, the center provides spaces for learning, storytelling and empowerment rooted in food, language and history.

Mississippi

This summer, the Mississippi Youth Media Project, a program of WKKF grantee Mississippi Free Press, is equipping a new generation of student journalists to investigate health access and disparities across the state. From maternal mortality to men’s mental health, these youth reporters are asking bold questions and telling stories that matter. Their work recently earned seven national awards through Report for America’s Student Journalism Awards — and it’s just getting started. Follow their reporting at jxnpulse.com.
