In September 2019, hundreds of Haitian women – leaders and feminists from across the country – gathered at the Royal Decameron Resort, north of Port-au-Prince. There they were joined by a delegation from Rwanda – women whose leadership has helped their country advance in the decades since its darkest days.
Around them in Haiti, a fuel shortage and anti-government protests dominated the conversation. But within their circle, the talk was of leadership, problem solving, collaboration and communities.
"Ladies, our participation in the political life of our dear Haiti has never been so necessary."
Topics ranged from waste management to violence against women and obstacles women face in attaining leadership positions. After two days, participants in the Forum of Haitian Women Elected Officials committed to resolutions aimed at changing policies and government practices across Haiti.
In this series, Haitian and Rwandan women leaders share thoughts on leadership and its role in the future of Haiti.
